This image is from the Ferngully Mardi Gras shoot that I did with Pandora Rose.
Had a lot of fun playing with texture. I used a very coarse glitter, metallic and matte body paints and gold metallic powders to get the different effects.

Giraffe Toes

Faux Giraffe Fact: Giraffes do not generally stand on their toes. They are quite tall enough, thank you. Lindsy was a fun model. I hope to body paint her again.
I'm really lucky to have some great models that I work with. Many of the models you may notice in different body paint photo shoots. It's nice when a you shoot with someone for a second, third and forth time because everyone is much more comfortable.
Some of the things I try to do to make my models more comfortable include letting them bring a friend, asking if the temperature is ok, encouraging breaks and snacks. I think the most important thing is edit the photos with the model. It doesn't matter how beautiful a model is, everyone has photos where they think they look bad. It could be that their smile is a little too goofy, their butt a bit too big or maybe they just think they have ugly elbows. I think if the model knows that they can delete any photo that they hate, it makes them much more comfortable when we shoot. It's all about making the model comfortable. If he or she isn't comfortable, it shows in the images.

I am however on painkillers for bumping my noggin (which sounds like it should be a much more exciting euphemism than it is). The conflict between my head and the loading bay door was declared a draw with neither displaying appreciable damage.

I am usually not a big fan of the gray and silver family of color. I typically prefer bright saturated colors. I do like how the silver mesh fabric almost makes the image look grainy.

FYI, my studio is a non-smoking space but we were outside for the shoot. Smoking is bad. It causes cancer. Cancer kills people. It makes their loved ones very sad. Simplistically explained but true.

Boy, I sure hope nobody is trying to google images for science homework on fetal giraffes. Student, take note, this is not a scientifically accurate representation of giraffe development but rather a young woman body painted in an abstract giraffe design and curled up in a fetal position. While the illustration may amuse your teacher, it will not in any way increase your gpa. Trust me on this. I know all about low GPAs.

I think pregnant bellies--of all shapes and sizes--are adorable. Although being pregnant was not my fave thing, I did like my basketball belly (mostly for the reason that I didn't have to suck in my stomach, ever!). But, would I roll up my shirt and paint a big fat smiley face, or hearts and unicorns on it? Um, no thanks! Yet, this is what some women are doing...

Apparently the new trend in baby bumps is painted baby bumps. Seriously. The Daily Mail ran an article that took a look at this kind-of-strange trend. The body art includes fish, smiley faces, baseball motifs, and more--all painted on pregnant bellies!

We have a nude beach about an hour from here. Getting the net was his idea and I really like the patterning and texture that it added. It was interesting going into my local Party City store with a guy painted blue and green.

Nova & I went to the beach on Friday. We shot two different looks. This is the second look which has a thin metallic silver coating over the blue/green body painting that I'll post tomorrow.
The wind and the water was very cold. He was quite the trooper. I'm blessed to have such nice models to work with.

If you're in the NYC area and you want to work with me, phone me at 908-725-1213.
My interests primarily focus on shooting models that I have painted as well as nudes. No interest in fashion.
I only use hypoallergenic, FDA compliant make up.
If you're a model, I'll probably be glad to do TFP if I shoot.
To avoid confusion, let me explain a bit how my TFP shoots work. I ONLY shoot on weekdays. You'll use no oils or lotions the day of the shoot and bring ID. Unobtrusive escorts are always welcome. This is a nude shoot. No pasties, g-strings, etc. as they look like crap when you try to paint over them.
We'll do a model release. You'll be painted with FDA compliant water based theatrical makeup. We'll shoot. We'll both sit down at the computer to review the images. Any images that do not meet your approval will be instantly deleted from the card. I will then edit the images and send you a disk of watermarked images by mail in about a week or two.
If there's a theme that you would like to explore in your painting, please let me know and I will consider it as a design possibility.
Allow about 5-6 hours total for the shoot. Wear old clothes that you would not mind to have stained if you are going to go home painted or I have a shower available for your use.
Please let me know if you have any questions about any of this as I want you to be comfortable with the process.

Sometimes I have an idea and look for a model. Sometimes a model inspires an idea. Other times, I ask the model what he or she would like to be and I just riff. She wanted to be the universe. There's a sun on her, and planets and spirals. The planets are fragile, soap bubble like things. Happy belated Earth Day!

I know it's Spring. I can feel it in my sinuses and other places. ;)
The model if Foxxy Squire and she's looking rather demure as an autumn leaf fairy.
I crafted the wings and headpiece out of 'silk flower' leaves, the collar is glued to her. Her bodice / corset/ whatever is body painted as are her panties and stockings. I really like how the patterning came out.
I know you've seen images of this shoot before. It's what happens when I grab images at random. Who knows what we'll have tomorrow.

Abstract Body Painting

In this body painting image, I was playing with textures, patterns and colors. I love to play and experiment. "Experiments in Body Painting" sounds like a B-movie.
What I was going for was the idea that her skin was cracking to reveal all these different colors, patterns and textures that were inside of her; that we are all much more colorful within than we appear to be on the surface.

I'm trying to post new body painting images daily and insert an element of randomness in the choice of body paint artwork.
Yesterday I finished culling 64 disks of images down to about 450 individual images. It's approximately 50 body paint photo shoots or what I've done in the past 2 years since I got a camera. I have all the images in a folder where they have numbers but not names. I'm picking one at random every day without turning on the thumbnail feature.
Today's body paint image is of Tim. It's a close up to show the detail in his painting. It focuses on his hands protecting the anatomical heart I painted on his chest.

These performers were body painted to match the fabric they were wearing. They did an aerial show at the famous Pacha Club in New York City. My DH & I were on the bus home at midnight and the bus was surrounded by throngs of people celebrating the New Year. They started rocking the bus, it was outrageous. I took the crowd picture out the bus window.

Yesterday was a pretty exciting day.
In the morning, I painted Olivia's belly for a segment on ABC.com. I'll let you know when it's posted. I tried to incorporate some of Olivia's favorite things as design motifs. Olivia love red and ladybugs. She has wonderful memories of her honeymoon in Hawaii and the baby's name mean "long lived treasure". Figuring out how to put Hawaii and a treasure together was the easy part. Figuring out how to incorporate the lady bug, not so much.
In the evening, I painted the rapper, Pandemonium for a performance. He brought reference, a design that he saw online that he wanted modified to include the blues of his sweater and the letter "P".

Here they are. The props used in this body paint shoot were very simple. We had some plastic beads on a cord (like mardi gras beads) and a piece of sheer striped fabric.

Justin was a very fun and enthusiastic model to work with. He was into the whole body painting experience and really got into character. I body painted him like a blue fire cat with a broken heart. The design incorporated graphic flames in place of stripes and the flame motif is echoed in his face painting. I'm posting a couple of picture of Justin to illustrate how lighting can really change the feel of a body paint photo shoot.

This hands-on workshop is for beginners.
Learn the basics you need to become a competent face painter. You will learn sponge work, blending, color theory, safety, how to choose a brush, proper brush care and a variety of brush strokes. There will be plenty of opportunities to practice what we learn. Come prepared to paint and be painted! You will be shown basic full faces and be able to practice these faces after each step by step demo. A maximum class size of 8 insures that you will have the close individual attention you need to learn the basics of face painting. There is a minimum of 4 students needed for the class. If you have your own face painting kit, please feel welcome to bring it so that you can practice what you are learning with tools that are familiar to you. Amanda was one of the first models that I shot in my studio.

She's a dancer & it shows. The models get to listen to the music that they like while we shoot. Amanda chose Billie Holliday.

We listen at Pandora.com, it's a great service. You enter your favorite artist or song and they play music that is similar. You can give the songs a thumbs up or down and the service learns what your personal tastes are. It can also put all your favorites together in a mix. Since I found Pandora, I don't listen to regular radio anymore. Oh, and it's free!

I'm not digging the backdrop so much. Oh well, you live and you learn, hopefully!

Tigers and other large cats are very popular designs for both face and body painting. I think that their popularity hearkens back to when body painting was primarily used in ceremonial magic. Or 'ceremonial magick', for the purists. Back in a time when a handheld piece of knapped flint was the latest in technology and the most advanced weapon, I could understand wishing to emulate the tigers' strength, grace and hunting prowess. Now, it's mostly adult women who wish to be body painted like a tiger as part of the whole sexy, feline thing and children who want to be face painted like a tiger because of the fierce power that the tiger represents.

I will tell you a story that always makes me cry.

My son was the guest of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Robert Wood Johnson Hospital for about 2 weeks a decade or so ago. The doctors were originally 'not optimistic'. But they worked their miracles and he was well again. I will be eternally grateful to them. I would have like to endowed a wing or something but my budgetary constraints didn't allow it. I volunteered to face paint there instead. The childlife staff had gotten to know me pretty well during my son's stay there and was very comfortable with me. I painted kids all over pediatrics, in the pediatric ICU, kids undergoing dialysis and in the cancer hospital. It was in the cancer hospital that I met Nana. She was a scared five year old. Her mom was even more scared. Nana did want to be painted though. She chose to be a tiger. I painted her face and an amazing transformation happened. She went from a very timid and frail child to a fierce pouncing tiger. Nurses cowered in fear from her. She roared and she lept. She bared her claws and her teeth. An equally amazing thing happened to her mom, she laughed, she got to enjoy her child being a child for a much too brief time. Nana and her mom giggled and roared together. Polaroids were taken.

Later that summer, at Nana's funeral, her mom talked about that day and how special it was to her.

There is magic in face and body painting. Use it for good.

Even though we're currently having a blizzard, I just booked my first shoot of the year for the beach! Nova is the hardy soul, don't worry, we're waiting until the end of April.

I can't wait until it's warm enough to shoot outside. My studio is about an hour from the nude beach.

Since I'm trying to think warm thoughts, here's a picture of Miss Rockett Girl rocking her mermaid body paint at the beach last summer. You've seen other images of her in my blog and on my website. I'm very blessed to have models who are up for pretty much anything. Life is good.

I saw this on about.com. I thought the advice was good. Like many of the great unwashed hoards, my artist hubby & myself lack health insurance. We also have prescription drugs that we need regularly.
One of the things that we do that isn't on the list is to go to the doctors office armed with a printout of the list of $4 walmart prescriptions ($10 for 3 months supply). These can save you LOTSA money. One real life example, my darling hubby used to pay $90 a month for his generic prescription. We were delighted when we found it at Costco for $30. We positively did a happy dance in the aisle when we were able to get it at Walmart for 3 bucks. That $77 DIFFERENCE on a single prescription make the difference between being able to be med compliant in some months.

1. Ask for Drugs with Generics
Drugs reps are good at swaying doctors towards the newest and most expensive prescription drugs, so you can't always assume that your doctor is going to prescribe the most affordable drug option. Before you leave the office, ask if the medication prescribed has a generic. If it doesn't, follow up by asking if there's a drug with a generic that would work as well for your condition. It's a simple question that could save a lot.
Want to be a more informed consumer? Pick up a copy of The Pill Book, and you can quickly check to see which drugs have a generic.

2. Seek Samples
Doctors' offices and hospitals often receive samples of new prescriptions. If you doctor insists on a name-brand medication, ask if he has any samples that he could give you. With a bit of luck you could receive a full course of an antibiotic or a month's supply of a maintenance drug free of charge.
Did You Know? Pharmacies also receive free sample from drug companies. Check with your pharmacist to see if they have any free samples of over-the-counter medications that you need. This can be a great way to try out new allergy or heartburn medicines, among others.
3. Request Coupons Coupons aren't just for groceries. Check with your doctor and pharmacist to see if they have any coupons or rebate offers for the prescriptions that you take. Still no luck? Visit the manufacturer's website to request coupons by mail.
4. Shop Around You shop around for everything else, so why not your prescriptions? Before you have any prescription filled, call around to several local pharmacies to find out who has the best price on your medication. This is especially beneficial if you don't have drug coverage – as the base price can vary extensively from pharmacy to pharmacy.
5. Go the Mail Order Route More and more insurance companies are pushing the use of mail order pharmacies, so check with your provider to see if they offer any discounts for using such a service. Often, you can get a three months supply of your prescription for the cost of a single co-pay – a very good deal indeed.
6. Split Pills If you are taking a tablet that comes in more than one strength (say 15mg and 30mg), you may be able to cut your medication costs by having the higher strength tablets cut in half. No prescription coverage? Don't resign yourself to paying full price; instead check around to see if you're eligible for a prescription discount card with any organization that you belong to – say AARP or even your auto insurance provider (mine offers a discount card to all members).
No luck turning up a free card? Shop around for a paid pharmacy discount card. In most cases, the savings will more than make up for the cost of membership.
9. Investigate Hardship Programs Budget too tight to cover the medication that you need? Don’t do without! Check with the maker of your prescription to see if they offer any hardship programs. My team did these body painting for Tava, a new Pepsi product. The body paint designs were based on the product artwork. We had to incorporate the product graphics & work around the bathing suits. The designs had to modified on the fly because we were allowed one less painter than originally planned for and we, of course, had less time to paint than originally planned for. It all worked out fine. We're used to being adaptable. The client was delighted. Life is good.

My lovely model is Patrice.

I shot her up on my roof. I really like how the metallic colors blend together and how the design echoes the lines of her body. While I had done a lot of bodypainting, she was the first model that I photographed. The shoot took place about a year and a half ago. I also like the color that the fabrics inject into the images.

I know that I said I was going to post new body painting images daily to this blog. I'm trying to keep a commitment that I made. I've got a killer day tomorrow. A business meeting @ 8am followed by treking up to the Bronx where I'm a volunteer face painting kids with special needs.

I know that I'm not likely to get to post before I run out in the morning so I'm posting early. It still counts, right?

Anyway, here are some pictures of Bobby (you can see other pictures of the body paint shoot we did last year in an earlier posting) and the infamous plastic dinosaurs. Come to think of it, Bobby might be infamous as well. ;) The first image was shot using my lensbaby. It's a funky kinda lense that has a single moveable focus point.

Here's a picture of Gizmo the cat with props from my last body paint photo shoot. These are not the best shots of the series, but I just wanted to include them because they show Gizmo looking quizzically at my model. Gizmo tries to get into just about every body paint photo shoot that I do. He thinks that the models are invited over for his amusement.

I do like how the images shows some of the detail on the body painted corset and the painted stockings. The patterning made me happy.

Barak Obama Body Painting

Gwen Guilford was at Barak Obama's inauguration and was kind enough to send me a couple of pictures that she entitled "Naked Obama Man". What more can one say?

It's a large glitter tattoo that I did for a very excited person who's going to the Inauguration.
I'm quite excited about it too. Wish I was there. Herb is going to be shirtless today.
DC is expected to have a high of 31F and a low of 10F. Windchill will bring that down a bit.
Hope Herb takes plenty of vitamin C.
