The Flower is the Sun is Watching.

The Sun is a Flower is watching

All seeing flower, mushroom eye shroom and the moon

I was thinking about the enormity of the natural world and how small our manmade world is in comparison. Moonlight, mushrooms and mysteries filled my thoughts. I wanted to make a painting where I included something like an apartment building into the scene of wild nature but the building was on a different scale. I started with very positive colors for the background, a confectionary swirl of yellow, pink and white. The central figure is a flower but is also not a flower. In the center of the flower is an eye. Nature is watching us. Is She looking concerned like a mother after her unruly children? The pupil and iris also form a stylized sun. There is an inner light in the flower as there is in all nature. Once, when my child was young and in intensive care, I received a visit from the hospital chaplain. He had never met anyone of my religion and did not know how to minister to me. We talked of the divinity within and the song, This Little Light of Mine, was our common ground. I believe that we need to recognize the divinity inherent in Nature so we don’t destroy it and in the process destroy ourselves. Not only is the flower radiant from within but the petals are also radiating like the rays of the sun.

The moon, with its mysteries, is the same color and directly diagonal from the apartment building. I’ve lived in small walkup apartments, like the one depicted, in New York City. Because of the proximity of neighbors, one is allowed neither privacy nor mystery.  Nature provides what our day-to-day lacks. The mushrooms bring their magic. Magic that is larger than the place where we live.

I wish you magic and mysteries wherever you may be. May you recognize the light within yourself and inside of everyone you meet.

Ladder to Enlightenment

painting of Ladder to Enlightenment

please click to enlarge

I like the symbolism of the ladder. I believe that we have the ability to elevate ourselves, our consciousness, our state of being, our lot in life, etc. For me, the eye represents enlightenment so a ladder leading up to the eye represents an individual’s journey to enlightenment. I believe that if we seek, if we ask ourselves the hard questions, we may find answers. I believe in the examined life.

The background colors are different, darker than those that I typically use. The reds and yellows are flame like, the dark and the black like that which has been burnt. There’s a lot of motion in this background, some of it kind of violent. I think it may be how I imagine Hell. I believe that a personal Hell is often the catalyst for change and for the start of one’s journey toward understanding. But even in this background, and perhaps, even in Hell, all is not lost. There is the soft, comforting pink and the white. There is refuge from the fires; there are things that can bring comfort.

There are four painted collage elements. Two are stylized archaic Goddesses. The third is the face of a woman. She may be a Goddess too, as may you. The ones and zeroes spell the word ‘love’ in binary code. Love is always there. It may not be immediately apparent; it may not take the form that you expect to see it in. You may need to look closely. You may need to expand your definition. Love is always there and it takes many forms. Look for it. Plant its seeds. Encourage it to grow where you find it. We are acculturated to think of love as primarily existing in one form. Commercials and popular media sell us Eros, sexual love. Don’t forget Agape, love for one’s children, spouse and deities. Or Philia, ‘brotherly love’, loyalty to family friends and community that grows from virtue, equality and familiarity.

I wish that you find love in all its myriad forms, that you recognize and nurture its seeds and plant many of your own. May we all grow together in love!

Smile Nothing – Healing Angel Art

Blue angel, nurse, healer painting

Smile Nothing – acrylic on canvas, 36×36″, click to enlarge

I was thinking about healing. About how some people are almost like angels because of the healing effect that they have on our lives. How they calm us and offer us succor. Blue is the color of healing. I have friends who light blue candles in times of illness and strife and focus on blue energy. I cannot help but love blue because I love the ocean. Although changeable, I find the blue of the ocean, the deeper blue much more calming than the blue of the sky. I envision the figure in the painting dreamlike, a healer, a nurse or a doctor. An aura of calmness surrounds her. She may have weathered a storm. A few feathers may have come loose but you can see her heart and feel her love. We are mortal. We try but sometimes we fail. Our hearts and our intentions are what matters.

I wish you peace. I wish you calm. I wish you someone to hold your hand and wipe your brow during the longest nights.
